Class-Scan Handler Pregnancy Scanning, Sheep Classing & Weighing
Click here to view a larger image. CONSTRUCTION This machine is constructed to enable a choice of multiple sheep handling functions to be performed. A lightweight RHS framework and profiled sheet metal create a solid confined area in which the sheep can stand, 350 mm above ground level, free but restricted in their movement.
The side of the unit closest to the operator has horizontal bars which are adjustable vertically to suit the operator's access to the sheep through the side. The entry gate is weight activated by the sheep standing on the hinged floor when they enter, this prevents them backing out or another sheep from entering. The exit gate has two control handles, one at floor level for scanning, the other at the top of the unit for classing. A quick connection is required to engage the gate control required.
Provision is made to connect the PEAK non backup ramp to the unit. When set up for weighing the unit is bolted to a frame base to which the weigh beams are attached and to separate the leadup ramp from the scanning/classing cage.
A commercially available electronic weigh system is used to the standard the customer requires. The cage is fitted with small rubber wheels at one end to facilitate easy movement by one person.
SCANNING Ultra-sound pregnancy scanning requires the ewe to be confined in a restricted space so the scanning probe can be manipulated by the operator to the correct area under the sheep this is required to obtain a quick and accurate internal image so an immediate result can be determined. The operator sits close to the ground within reach of the exit gate control, inlet of the sheep is automatic through the entry gate, it opens when the previous sheep leaves. Typically, throughput has to be high so large mobs can be processed quickly without stressing the ewes at a critical stage of pregnancy.
CLASSING Classing
is a specialized profession requiring great skill and knowledge in selecting the
appropriate ewe for breeding programs to produce the highest value fleeces
possible from the available genetics. Correct presentation of the sheep
for inspection is very important. The classing cage provides an elevated view of
the sheep, this eliminates back bending and stooping and allows complete access
to the sheep by the classer. Because of the restricted movement of the
sheep, minimum effort is required to thoroughly inspect each animal, this
reduces fatigue and must produce a better, more uniform result. Throughput
rate is important if large numbers are being inspected, a minimum of staff is
required if a good leadup system is connected. WEIGHING Weighing can be performed in conjunction with either of the above operations or as a separate task. With modern electronic computer based flock recording systems this can be a valuable tool in monitoring the performance of the flock for the sheep breeder. It is also suitable for weighing fat lambs.
MOBILITY The unit is extremely portable, easy to load on a ute or box trailer and set up in any location. Permanent attachment to a purpose-built trailer sometimes suits the contractor with shades, leadup systems etc. all carried on the mobile unit it is simply backed in and ready for operation in minutes. |
